Pros

  • Built-In File Explorer. Better than most built-in explorers, and better than many paid explorers.
  • WiFi-Only download options. Protect your cellular data limit.
  • Easy upload/download limit management.

Cons

  • Standard mobile app issues. TorrDroid doesn't always close when you swipe it away or even specifically close the app in options. You may need to force exit and check the running apps.
  • No sleep mode resistance, so many sure to change your mobile device settings to allow the app to do what it needs to do. Advanced users thrive here.
  • Nothing else. Standard, solid torrent app that doesn't have amateur design flaws!

What is TorrDroid?

TorrDroid is a torrent app for mobile devices, which includes a search engine, file browsing utility, and download status controls.

As far as torrent apps, it doesn't stand out any more than the others. It has fairly basic options that you'd expect from a basic torrent program, such as setting specific download and upload limits, magnet links, wi-fi only download safety options, and individual file downloads in batch torrents.

Download and Upload Limit Control

When using torrents, it's important to know how well your network can handle bulk downloads.

For many people, downloading or uploading at full-speed can take down the entire network. For most, you're at least slowing down other internet activities.

The faster your download speed, the more internet bandwidth you use. Bandwidth is like the size of a water hose, and you have to fill buckets of water to load webpages, view streaming sites, or do anything on the internet.

If the torrents are taking full control of the hose, the other activities won't load quickly or at all. Even worse, some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) or your the internet equipment you're using (modem, router, switch, hub, access point, hotspot, you name it) could be flooded with a demand for internet power that it can't handle.

You can control this by setting specific limits for the download and upload--and both matter. Most internet customers have a specific download and upload speed, and getting too close to that maximum can ruin your internet experience.

If you've ever had a roommate, sibling, or significant other who seemed to drain the internet when they were home, that's what's going on. If you want to be considerate while using torrents, just figure out the maximum speed of the connect and set your download a bit less than that.

If the other people aren't big on downloading, give them at least 10mbps of overhead. If they're playing online games or in a voice or video call, COMPLETELY shut off the download in addition to giving them some download room.

TorrDroid handles this level of speed control very well. To figure out which numbers to enter for the download and upload, just run a speed test and enter the number of kilobytes or megabytes.

Most speed tests read speeds in megabits. While there is some math involved, a good shortcut is to shave off a zero and consider that the speed.

A 200mbps connection will have a max of around 20mb/s in TorrDroid. To be totally fair, enter 10mbps for your download limit. You can get away with 15. The full 20 might disconnect you and the others using the internet.
